Two weeks ago, I faced one of the most challenging moments since launching Merryoaks. In the span of just one week, we lost £82,000 worth of deal commissions. It was a gut-wrenching blow, especially as one of those deals had been over 12 months in discussion and 4 months in the application process.
Initially, I felt disappointment, as anyone would. However, after taking time to reflect, I’ve realised that this moment doesn’t define us—it’s part of a bigger picture. What I feel most now is pride in how far Merryoaks has come since its inception.
We continue to work on projects that we are incredibly proud to be associated with, collaborating with amazing clients and staying true to our mission. Our passion, ambition, and determination to become one of the leading specialist property finance brokerages remain steadfast. Even with the economic turbulence of the past 18–24 months, we’ve found ways to adapt, serve, and grow.
Every Journey Has Its Challenges
Building something great means facing setbacks. While it's natural to ask, Why did this happen? What could we have done differently? What should we do more or less of?—these are the questions that drive growth and improvement. At Merryoaks, one of our guiding principles is this: Can I go to bed at night and honestly say I did everything I could, within reason, to make this deal work?
In the case of the deals we lost, the answer is a resounding yes. And that’s what gives me peace. Sometimes, the cards simply don’t fall in your favour. But here’s the silver lining: the clients involved are still grateful for the work we did, and they’re open to working with us again in the future. Knowing this strengthens my belief that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
Looking Ahead with Optimism
I love what we do at Merryoaks. Our pipeline remains strong, supported by fantastic clients and exciting opportunities. The future is bright, and our mission to tackle the affordable housing crisis keeps us focused and inspired.
Setbacks are part of the journey, but they’re also opportunities to learn, grow, and build even greater resilience. We’re not just surviving; we’re thriving—and I’m excited about what’s to come.
Thank you for being part of our story.
