Welcome to the First Merryoaks Monday Morning Musing!

As we embark on this new chapter of connecting with you through our weekly musings, it feels fitting to start at the very beginning: where the name “Merryoaks” comes from. Many have asked me about its origin, and I’m delighted to share the story behind it.

Growing up in the Northeast, I knew from the age of 10 that I wanted to be an estate agent. My parents were active in the property market, buying two-up, two-down terraced houses in and around County Durham during the late 1980s. At the time, they would purchase homes for as little as £2,000 and sell them for £4,000 to £6,000, while the average UK house price hovered around £80,000. I was also inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of my best friend’s father, a property developer and owner of a chain of estate agents. Watching them, I found myself captivated by the possibilities within the world of property and decided it was the path I wanted to follow.

Durham City, where I grew up, holds a special place in my heart. My adolescence was spent in a semi-detached house on a beautiful housing estate called Merryoaks. This area was, and still is, a remarkable part of the city, with two distinct Merryoaks estates across the road from each other. The original Merryoaks estate was a charming collection of semi-detached homes, with a few detached properties nestled in cul-de-sacs and crescents. At its heart was a community park, complete with pristine bowling greens, tennis courts, children’s play equipment, and a full-sized football pitch, perfect for Sunday league games.

Adjacent to the park stood Park House, a grand, leafy home that was converted into St. Cuthbert’s Hospice in 1988—a transformation that continues to serve the community today. Across the road lay the “new” Merryoaks estate, a more modern development of detached homes. Both estates benefited from their enviable location: next to Durham University campuses, next to an 18-hole golf course, a new college with sports fields, riverside paths, pubs, and even a holiday park—all just a stone’s throw from Durham City Centre.

This charming and vibrant environment was where my passion for property was first sparked, and it remains a place I cherish deeply. When I reflect on the name Merryoaks, and in particular the two words adjoined to create the unique name, it evokes a sense of “long-lasting happiness.” It makes me want to create and help others in their creation of similar spaces for people to work, rest and play. It captures the spirit of the community I grew up in, the joy, the ambition and aspiration I hope to share with you.
